He was 68 years old and suffered from dementia in his later years.

Buzz was born August 15, 1942, to Marvin and Bertha Lauritsen of Boone. He graduated from Boone High School, enlisted in the National Guard and later attended Grand View College in Des Moines, all before returning to Boone to assist and later run his father’s insurance business.

As a life-long entrepreneur, he began working in the family ice cream shop, in adulthood taking on the family insurance agency, and later alongside his family, founding Cleaveland Aircraft Tool. Striving for perfection led him to design and create solutions to mechanical challenges that were both functional and beautiful. Building and rebuilding everything from toasters, to clocks, to steam engines, to airplanes, gave Buzz master craftsman status in the minds of friends and family.

Much of Buzz’s life revolved around his love for aviation, beginning by flying RC models as a child, then piloting passenger airplanes in 1970. He built his first full size aircraft in the mid ‘70s, and a second into the late ‘80s. Buzz served as Commissioner of the Boone Municipal Airport for 18 years, from 1980-1999, as well as a judge of homebuilt aircraft for more than 10 years at EAA’s annual fly-in held in Oshkosh, WI. Buzz’s RV-4 two-passenger, fully-aerobatic kitplane won EAA’s Grand Champion kit build award in 1989 and the Wright Brother’s award in 1990.

Buzz’s other interests included rebuilding cars (Corvette, VW Beatle, Bernardi, Model A, many others), hunting, fishing, model trains, photography, guitar, ham radio, thunderstorms and gathering with friends for grill outs, bonfires, picnic club and the Elks.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha, and his parents, Marvin and Bertha. He is survived by his wife, DJ, two children, Mike and Jensie, as well as their spouses, Christina and Bill, and granddaughter Mikayla.

A casual Memorial Celebration will be held at the Boone Municipal Airport, north hangar, on July 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the family with intention of supporting music therapy for dementia patients. The family would also like to thank all of the friends and family and community members who have extended support and prayers during this challenging process.

Boone Flight Breakfast, May 21

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 308px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oIWPCNh5hPo/Tb-FJ5oRjtI/AAAAAAAAACo/nyPTkjHLQmQ/s400/flightbreakfast.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602342866607247058" />

FAA Safety Presentation on March 15

Chris Manthe of the Central Region FAASTeam will present a program on March 15 at 7:30PM at CY Aviation.

Program Title: Manipulation of the Flight Review: To change by artful means so as to serve one's purpose.

The flight review is a vital link in the general aviation safety chain. Kelley gave an update on giving Susie Richmond’s 8th grade students the promised ride
in a plane.

The meeting was adjourned and Dick Schneider gave the program on 1st generation German jet
fighters.

Join us for the 2010 Boone Area Pilots Assn. Holiday Gathering!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BRf-DLgvaUE/TOQex1ff6oI/AAAAAAAAACY/IYSL8aIiZO0/s320/IMG_5785.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540587283094170242" />
The 2010 BAPA Holiday Gathering will be held on Tuesday, December 14th at the Iowa Stater Restaurant inside the Gateway Center Hotel in Ames. The Iowa Stater is a casual restaurant featuring fun ambiance and a nice selection of "comfort foods." We will be ordering off of their menu and lucky for us, Tuesdays are "$10 On Tuesday" special nights! Normally $20 entrees are just $10! Plan to gather in the restaurant social area at 6:30 for a cash bar and other treats. We'll be seated for dinner at 7 and when we have finished, we can move down to their lobby area for our gift exchange. I thought it would be nice to have everyone bring a plate of Christmas cookies to share during the gift exchange. How does that sound? The gift exchange limit is $10 and please don't include gag gifts this year...we want REAL stuff! Please label your gift as for either a man, a woman or either. If the weather is really bad, use your own discretion. BAPA members are very loyal (!) and we have fought raging blizzards to make it to holiday gatherings. But still, use your discretion and put safety first. If anyone from Boone wants to carpool, let us all know. We could meet at CYA and go from there. If you are coming from out of town, you might consider an overnight stay at the Gateway that night..a fun pre-holiday overnight with your special someone, perhaps?

I have asked that you sign up by DEC. 7th so I can let the restaurant know how many to expect. You can email me directly at lkkuehl@gmail.com, or there will be a signup sheet at CYA. Family, guests and prospective BAPA members are welcome to attend with you. Dress is business-casual..or you can get dolled up in your best holiday garb, or don your Cyclone spirit colors! We usually have some sort of little game or program to share, so plan on something fun before opening gifts. I hope we have a great turnout and great weather to go with it! If you have questions, just holler. The Gateway Hotel is near the intersection of Highway 30 and University Boulevard, near the football stadium and Iowa State Center. OH...don't forget to bring your 2011 dues if you haven't paid up yet. Dues are $15 per couple or individual per year. Thanks! See you on the 14th, I hope!

BAPA October Meeting Minutes

BAPA Meeting Minutes 10-19-10

Members Present:   Ron & Diane H; Fran & Alice L; Dick S; Bob & Dino R; Kelley K; Connie Y; Lisa K;

1. The BAPA membership drive is still open. We have two who have joined. It was moved, seconded, and passed that new member dues for those who join between now and the end of the year apply to their 2011 dues in full.
5. It was decided that Saturday was better for us than Sunday. After looking at the 2010 IA flight breakfast schedule and this year’s BAPA schedule, it was decided to plan to host this in 2011. The local VFW is willing to handle all the food. They offer a $5 biscuit, gravy, and fried potatoes breakfast.
It was decided we need to make a specific invitation to join BAPA to all those who fly out of the Boone airport. Dave has a mailing list. We will use next month’s meeting to address and stuff envelopes to invite local pilots to join. **Connie will ask if Jeff could write the letter.
We have 8 or 10 past members who have not paid their dues for this year. It is still $10 per year. We encourage all interested people receiving this email to send their dues to Bob Rosene at 1609 Kate Shelley Dr, Boone IA 50036 or leave it at the Boone Airport.
The meeting was adjourned and the meeting was turned over to Bob R. who had the program. Mike Vogt spoke. He is the curator of the Iowa Gold Star Museum in Johnston. It is located in Camp Dodge and has free admission. It is open Mon – Sat 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed holidays and holiday weekends. It honors all Iowan’s contributions to the defense of our state and nation down through history.
Respectfully submitted,
Diane Harland

Come to Military Appreciation Day on August 14

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 304px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BRf-DLgvaUE/TDUS4XQWFzI/AAAAAAAAACI/UVRH6BGi4d0/s400/mil-1.poster+1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491316080172734258" />

May BAPA minutes

BAPA Meeting Minutes 5-18-10

Members Present: Ron & Diane H; Frank D.; Fran & Alice L; Bill & Kate Durbin; Jeff L; Dick S.

The meeting was called to order by V Pres Fran.

The April minutes were presented and approved.

Financial Report:

Deposits: Dues 10.00

Expenses: 00.00

Balances on hand: Checking 430.45

                                   Cash 29.52

                                   Money Market CD 2107.38

Total Assets: 2567.35

Old Business:

The results of the hanger dance were discussed. He is with Wycliffe Bible translators in Brazil. He is a missionary pilot and mechanic with JARS.

The June meeting of BAPA was called to order by President Bill D.

The June minutes were presented and approved. Moved Fran, seconded Dino. Passed

Treasurer Report:
Income - 0 (dues)
Interest - .07
Expenses – zero
Balance on hand - $2,802.70
$120 of the balance on hand belongs to the Destination Iowa Flying Event (half goes to the winner and half goes to BAPA).
The finance report was approved.

Old Business:
1. Destination Iowa update. Mark has visited 59 airports to date.
2. Peg reported that Suzanne Richmond will be our October program. She teaches her aviation program every spring. Dave K. suggested that we combine this with the IA Aviation Promotion Group. They hold periodic IA Aviation Youth Camps. AOPA also has a youth program curriculum for such an event. It would also be nice if we could give airplane rides through the Young Eagles program. Dave left some printed information at the meeting regarding all these resources. There is a certificate that is available from the DOT of IA to show that the kids have gone through the program.
3. Dick reported on the patch order. He sent around a sample of the patch he ordered. Bill reported about vinyl stickers. A 4X6 inch sticker would be $5. They can be scaled to any size and the price would be accordingly.
4. We could use the vinyl sticker as a banner for BAPA when the next Farm Progress Show comes to Boone.
5. Two people (Jeff and ??) will be going to Decatur, Illinois to this year’s Farm Progress Show. They will be representing Boone there. They are looking for give a ways to promote Boone. They are short some funds to send the two people. It will cost about $900 to send the two. It is Sept. 1-3.

New Business:
1. Fran is taking names of people who would like to go to the Beads Lake Museum on August 16th at 2 PM (Saturday). Anyone who wishes to go needs to get their name in to Fran soon.
2. Fran reported a three day outing at the Alexis Inn Alexis Park Inn hotel at Iowa City near the end of August.
3. The week end of August 22, the Ankeny airport is holding a flight breakfast and the Ford Tri Motor airplane will be there.
4. Special mention was made about the Able Island airport pot luck fly in event. It is on the Mississippi river 2 miles north of Guttenburg on August 29th. The time is noon.
5. The August 18th meeting of BAPA will be a flying event. We will fly to Anita to eat at the restaurant there. Plans are to meet at Anita by 6PM in order for the return flight to be during daylight. Check with the Boone airport by 3 PM in case of bad weather. In case of bad weather, we will BBQ at BNW as usual on the 18th.
6. Future programs ideas are air to air photography and the new on line wings program.

Upcoming program schedule:
August – Ron Harland
September – Bob Baird
October – Peg.
November - open
December - Holiday party

Respectfully submitted.
Diane Harland

92 y/o Newsman & Aircraft Delivery

Click on the following video link to see how the paper is delivered in the Sierras:
www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4763472n%3fsource=search_video

New Hours of Operation at CY Aviation

CY Aviation has new hours of operation as follows:

Monday 09:00 AM - 7:00 PM
Tuesday 09:00 AM - 7:00 PM
Wednesday 09:00 AM - 7:00 PM
Thursday 09:00 AM - 7:00 PM
Friday 08:00 AM - 7:00 PM
Saturday 08:00 AM - 7:00 PM
Sunday 08:00 AM - 5"00 PM

We may be closed when the weather is below IFR minimums (less than one mile visibility or a ceiling lower that 400 feet).

For services at other times, call Connie at (515) 795-2306.
