This free event for pilots, their families and friends (or anyone interesting in exploring aviation) returns to Boone Municipal Airport. Our first Pilot Palooza was much-enjoyed, so if you missed it last year don't miss out again!

Boone City Council tours airport

On July 7 CY Aviation provided members of the Boone City Council with an inside look at the airport's operations and recently upgraded facilities. Participants were shown the newly-constructed hangars and given a short flight over Boone to demonstrate the airport's new GPS instrument approach. They also toured CY Aviation and W&C Aircraft. In addition to the Council, guests included Mayor John Slight, City Administrator Luke Nelson, and Carl Beyers of Snyder & Associates.

Remembering Flight 232: 25 Years Later (July 18-20)

Three days designed to reflect on when United Flight 232, en route from Denver to Chicago, crash-landed at Sioux City Airport on July 19, 1989. The events will focus on lessons learned in the emergency response and honor the 112 lives lost.

All events are free and open to the public.

The discussion "What Happened, What We’ve Learned, and What Has Changed" (Friday evening, 7PM) includes Flight 232's captain, Al Haynes, as well as Boone physician Dr. David Greco, among others. Captain Haynes is credited with saving 185 lives despite having lost all three of the DC-10's hydraulic control systems, a situation which made the plane nearly impossible to fly or land.

Al Haynes, hero of United Flight 232, to speak in WDM on April 22

A former pilot is coming back to visit Iowa 25 years after his plane crashed in Sioux City. Al Haynes will speak at the 2014 Iowa Aviation Conference. Haynes was the captain of United Flight 232 which crashed in July, 1989 at the Sioux Gateway Airport. The flight from Denver to Chicago suffered an engine failure and it crashed on the runway during an emergency landing. Sadly, 112 people died, but Captain Haynes was credited for saving 184 lives that day. Haynes will speak on April 22nd at the West Des Moines Sheraton. The event starts at 7 p.m., it's free and open to the public.

Minutes from March BAPA Meeting

18 Mar 2014 BAPA Meeting Minutes The weather allowed for outside grilling; we also had a good assortment of tasty potluck dishes. We reviewed and discussed BAPA involvement for the outing for the Boy Scouts’ Aviation badge. Dave Morgan is the primary contact. We are expecting approximately 150 scouts on 26 Apr 2014. The program will have 4 concurrent, 50 minute sessions. Each session will be directed toward a generalized area of aviation. Station 1-- Will deal primarily on the forces and dynamics of aircraft flight using models. Station 2-- Pre-flight inspections, planning, etc Station 3 -- Careers in aviation such as pilot, mechanic and ATC, etc. Station 4 -- The Scouts will “build” a balsa model, and decide which runway on a BNW mockup to use and discuss accordingly. This will be an opportunity to bring real world situations into the discussions. There will be six presentations for each session during the day so we will need reinforcements and any help will be appreciated. If you can help out on any of these sessions, contact Dave Morgan at 515-432-1018 and let him know your availability and area of interest. Some of the sessions will be held at the Guard facilities, some at our main FBO and some at W&C Aircraft coordinated by Keith Campbell. Talk to Keith directly if you wish to help out with touring of W&C Aircraft. Our treasurer reported us as being solvent and 2014 dues are due. They remain at $15/year for a member or family. You can pay dues at the meeting, leave dues with Dave or Connie, or send to Alice Laabs, 19599 515th Ave, Ames, IA 50014. The condition of the airport sign was discussed and who is responsible for upkeep. Fran volunteered to talk to Keith to determine more details. Future activities: 1) A weekend flyout to either Sully or Amana was discussed. Dates ruled out: Mothers Day and RV Day Flyin Day. We will be looking for a decision on date. Other suggestions are welcomed. 2) Farm Progress show will be at Boone this year, Aug. 26, 27 & 28—2014. Put this on your calendar and start considering if you are able to help out and in what capacity. 3) PilotPalooza will again be held this year. Details are yet to be firmed up. Feeling Boxed In

No, we are not now running a kennel operation on the side. These are not homes for dogs, but for fuel hoses! Connie recently constructed these beauties. After the fuel pumps were moved during the ramp renovation project the old housings needed to be replaced. Red is for Auto Fuel; blue is 100LL.

Ames Pancake Breakfast Fly-In this Saturday!

The Iowa State Flying Cyclones Pancake Breakfast/Fly-in scheduled for this Saturday, April 13, starting at 7am at the Ames Municipal Airport. There be several ISU club displays, airplanes, the Iowa Hieratage Museum is setting up a display, and Chris Cakes breakfast and coffee will be served for $6; kids $4.

2012 BABA Holiday Gathering

The 2012 BAPA Holiday Gathering will be Tuesday, December 4th at the Iowa Stater Restaurant in the Gateway Hotel in Ames - 2100 Green Hills Drive, Ames, IA (515) 268-2238. This is the same location we have used for the past 2 years. The hotel is at the intersection of US 30 and University Blvd, near the Reiman Gardens and football stadium.

Social hour/cash bar will start at 5:30 and seating for dinner will begin at 6 pm. We will order off of their menu. After dinner, we will move to the lower lobby for our program, gift exchange and Christmas cookie exchange/sampling.

Please bring a $10-ish quality gift, labeled for a man, a woman or either. No gag gifts...we want REAL stuff!

Please also bring a dozen holiday treats to share. Children, family, friends and prospective new BAPA members are welcomed! If you are one of those dues-paying folks that we never get to see or have never met in person, please try to attend. Also, dues for 2013 may be paid at the gathering...dues are $15 per individual or family.

Dress code is holiday casual or Iowa State cardinal and gold, as you please.

Our party will go on rain or shine...we have had some awful weather in the past, but always manage to overcome. However, please use your good judgment in case Mother Nature decides to interfere. 2011 BAPA Holiday Gathering!

The 2011 BAPA Holiday Get-Together will be on Tuesday, December 6th, at the Iowa Stater Restaurant in the Gateway Hotel in Ames, IA. The Gateway is at the intersection of Highway 30 and University Boulevard...close to Jack Trice Stadium and Reiman Gardens.

Social hour begins at 5:30 pm, with dinner from 6-7:30 and our annual gift exchange/program afterwards. Please bring a nice gift in the $10 range that is labeled for a man, a woman or either. Feel free to get creative with your gift...both on the inside and outside. No gag gifts please...we want real stuff!

Dress is holiday casual or Cyclone fan, as you desire.

Below is a link to the Iowa Staters' menu, which you will be ordering off of. They are not offering their Tuesday night specials, but no worries...they have a wide range of items to choose from to fit every budget. And the food is very nice.

Boone Aviation Community Loses a Leader and Friend

R.M. “Buzz” Lauritsen, Craftsman, Entrepreneur and Patriarch, Dies at 68

August 15, 1942 - July 18, 2011

Buzz, known as the “go-to guy” when in need of excellence in mechanical solutions, life-long resident of Boone, passed away July 18, 2011. He was 68 years old and suffered from dementia in his later years.

Buzz was born August 15, 1942, to Marvin and Bertha Lauritsen of Boone. He graduated from Boone High School, enlisted in the National Guard and later attended Grand View College in Des Moines, all before returning to Boone to assist and later run his father’s insurance business.

As a life-long entrepreneur, he began working in the family ice cream shop, in adulthood taking on the family insurance agency, and later alongside his family, founding Cleaveland Aircraft Tool. Striving for perfection led him to design and create solutions to mechanical challenges that were both functional and beautiful. Building and rebuilding everything from toasters, to clocks, to steam engines, to airplanes, gave Buzz master craftsman status in the minds of friends and family.

Much of Buzz’s life revolved around his love for aviation, beginning by flying RC models as a child, then piloting passenger airplanes in 1970. He built his first full size aircraft in the mid ‘70s, and a second into the late ‘80s. Buzz served as Commissioner of the Boone Municipal Airport for 18 years, from 1980-1999, as well as a judge of homebuilt aircraft for more than 10 years at EAA’s annual fly-in held in Oshkosh, WI. Buzz’s RV-4 two-passenger, fully-aerobatic kitplane won EAA’s Grand Champion kit build award in 1989 and the Wright Brother’s award in 1990.

Buzz’s other interests included rebuilding cars (Corvette, VW Beatle, Bernardi, Model A, many others), hunting, fishing, model trains, photography, guitar, ham radio, thunderstorms and gathering with friends for grill outs, bonfires, picnic club and the Elks.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha, and his parents, Marvin and Bertha. He is survived by his wife, DJ, two children, Mike and Jensie, as well as their spouses, Christina and Bill, and granddaughter Mikayla.

A casual Memorial Celebration will be held at the Boone Municipal Airport, north hangar, on July 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the family with intention of supporting music therapy for dementia patients. The family would also like to thank all of the friends and family and community members who have extended support and prayers during this challenging process.

FAA Safety Presentation on March 15

Chris Manthe of the Central Region FAASTeam will present a program on March 15 at 7:30PM at CY Aviation.

Program Title: Manipulation of the Flight Review: To change by artful means so as to serve one's purpose.

The flight review is a vital link in the general aviation safety chain. The purpose of the flight review is to provide for a regular evaluation of pilot skills and aeronautical knowledge. The flight review is also intended to offer pilots the opportunity to design a personal currency program in consultation with a CFI. The CFI should tailor the flight review and proficiency plan to each pilot's skill, experience, aircraft and personal flying goals.

The meeting will be held at CY Aviation located at the Boone Municipal Airport. Thank you to the Boone Area Pilots Association.

4. Adam Danhauer’s letter was passed around thanking BAPA for the memorial donation of $100.00.

5. A care box was sent to Afghanistan filled with donated items of chap stick, small sample size of shampoos, lotions, etc. There were also some dog treats included because this box was sent to a canine unit. It was decided to continue collecting items to send another box as soon as this one is filled.

6. We are still planning on giving Susie Richmond’s 8th grade students the promised ride in a plane. Plans are to try to do this mid-late March.

7. New Business: Upcoming events:
Greenfield Chili Fly-In, on Jan 29th, 11-2 at the Iowa Aviation Museum.
The Farm Progress show is in Decatur IL this August 30, 31st. It would be nice for some of us to fly there to see how they handle the aviation traffic.
In September, the Blue Angels will be at the Lincoln NE Municipal Airport for an Air show Sept 10 & 11 commemorating the 10th anniversary of Sept 11th.
The Da Vinci exhibit will continue showing at the Des Moines Science Center until March 20, 2011.
RV Days is June 18th in Boone.
IA Falls fly-in breakfast omelets is July 4th from 7-10 AM.
“Thunder in the Valley”, Thunderbirds Air Show at Waterloo Airport, August 27, 28th.

8. Discussion was held on a flight breakfast hosted at CY aviation with the VFW providing sausage gravy and biscuits. This was tentatively set for May 21st from 7-10 AM

Introducing the CY Aviation "Skycam"

As of this month, CY Aviation offers the world an opportunity for a live look at Boone Municipal Airport !

We are now providing live images from the CY Aviation "Skycam" to the World Wide Web via our homepage (booneairport.com), and also via the popular weather website "Weather Underground" (wunderground.com).

Skycam faces east, showing sky conditions, the windsock and any planes that might happen to be refueling in front of the FBO building. Images on booneairport.com refresh every 15 seconds.

The Weather Underground site offers several interesting features, such as an overview of images from each day of the month, and a video loop that shows time lapse images from a 24-hour period. These can be reached by navigating to wunderground.com, then clicking on "Webcams" in the upper portion of the screen. When the page named "Weather Webcams" appears, click on "Iowa," and then select "Boone."

Mobile apps: CY Aviation Skycam images are also available via the free app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad called "World Weather Forecast." This is a really nice app that you won't stop using. And don't forget that word "free!" If you use other Weather or Webcam apps and come across our images, let us know so we can spread the word!

6. Bob R suggested that we raise the dues to $15.00 so we would have funds to help
charitable causes such as the military or food pantry. It was passed. Dues will be $15
per couple this coming year. You can bring the dues to the Christmas party on the 14th.
7. Kelley gave an update on giving Susie Richmond’s 8th grade students the promised ride
in a plane.

Join us for the 2010 Boone Area Pilots Assn. Holiday Gathering!

The 2010 BAPA Holiday Gathering will be held on Tuesday, December 14th at the Iowa Stater Restaurant inside the Gateway Center Hotel in Ames. The Iowa Stater is a casual restaurant featuring fun ambiance and a nice selection of "comfort foods." We will be ordering off of their menu and lucky for us, Tuesdays are "$10 On Tuesday" special nights! Normally $20 entrees are just $10! Plan to gather in the restaurant social area at 6:30 for a cash bar and other treats. We'll be seated for dinner at 7 and when we have finished, we can move down to their lobby area for our gift exchange. I thought it would be nice to have everyone bring a plate of Christmas cookies to share during the gift exchange. How does that sound? The gift exchange limit is $10 and please don't include gag gifts this year...we want REAL stuff! Please label your gift as for either a man, a woman or either. If the weather is really bad, use your own discretion. BAPA members are very loyal (!) and we have fought raging blizzards to make it to holiday gatherings. But still, use your discretion and put safety first. If anyone from Boone wants to carpool, let us all know. We could meet at CYA and go from there. If you are coming from out of town, you might consider an overnight stay at the Gateway that night..a fun pre-holiday overnight with your special someone, perhaps?

3. Susie Richmond still wants to have plane rides for the 8th grade students that were not able to ride last summer. Plans are to do it on a Saturday in November.
4. The BAPA membership drive is still open. We have two who have joined. It was moved, seconded, and passed that new member dues for those who join between now and the end of the year apply to their 2011 dues in full.
5. Lisa discussed the Christmas party plans. We would like to have it December 14th as a first choice and December 7th as a second choice. Lisa will check the Gigglin Goat, the Gateway Hotel, and other restaurants and send out information to the club.
6. The program was presented by Harley Weyer about his time spent working with NASA.
